‘Karuppu’ Release Stumbles on Opening Day Amid Financial Uncertainty
Tamil superstar Suriya’s highly anticipated film hits an unexpected roadblock hours before its scheduled debut, leaving thousands of fans in limbo.
CHENNAI — What was meant to be a celebration turned into confusion on the release day of Karuppu, the much-awaited Tamil action drama starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan. Theatres across Tamil Nadu that had originally scheduled special 9 AM screenings began withdrawing those shows without prior notice, triggering widespread frustration among fans who had planned their day around the film’s opening.
“Morning Shows Pulled Without Warning”
The Tamil Nadu government had granted permission for early morning shows, and advance bookings had been running strong in the days leading up to the release. However, on the morning of the release, multiple cinema halls quietly removed the 9 AM slots from their schedules. Producer S.R. Prabhu subsequently issued a brief public statement acknowledging the cancellation of morning screenings, attributing it to unavoidable circumstances — without elaborating further.
Financial Troubles at the Core
As speculation mounted, industry sources shed light on the matter. Ruban Mathivanan of GK Cinemas confirmed that financial complications were behind the disruption, adding that there was no clarity yet on when the first show would begin. A separate source connected to Suriya’s team indicated that negotiations were actively underway to resolve the situation. According to the source, a positive outcome from those discussions could see screenings resume by 11 AM or, at the latest, during afternoon slots.
Fans Voice Disappointment
The sudden development drew a strong reaction from Suriya’s fanbase across the state. Many had taken time off work and purchased tickets well in advance in anticipation of the first-day first show experience. Social media platforms saw an outpouring of reactions — ranging from disappointment and frustration to messages of solidarity for the film’s team. The intensity of the response reflected the enormous expectations the film had built ahead of its release.
About Karuppu
Directed by RJ Balaji, Karuppu features Suriya in a complex dual-shaded role that draws on themes of justice and the folk deity Karuppasamy. The film marks the reunion of Suriya and Trisha Krishnan on screen after a long gap, with supporting performances from Yogi Babu, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika, and RJ Balaji. The project had generated significant buzz through its song teasers and was expected to blend courtroom drama, mass entertainment, and social commentary. Bookings had been robust right up until news of the release complications emerged.
