Fire Erupts at Pallikaranai Dump Yard, Spreads to Adjacent Vehicle Lot

A devastating fire broke out at the Pallikaranai dump yard on Thursday morning, rapidly escalating into a major blaze that breached the perimeter of a neighbouring vehicle storage area. The fire spread row by row through the impounded automobile lot before fire-fighting teams could establish a containment line. The sheer speed at which the flames advanced left little time for preventive measures.

Over 100 Court-Seized Cars Reduced to Ash in Corporation Land

Preliminary assessments confirm that more than a hundred automobiles all court-seized vehicles kept under the custody of the Greater Chennai Corporation — were completely destroyed in the fire. The vehicles, parked in rows across the holding ground, offered little resistance to the spreading flames. Authorities are yet to put an exact figure on the total financial loss, but the destruction of such a large number of impounded cars is considered highly significant.

Dense Black Smoke Blankets Pallikaranai, Velachery and Surrounding Areas

The fire unleashed a thick column of black smoke that drifted across several residential pockets in south Chennai, including Pallikaranai and Velachery. Residents in these localities reported breathing discomfort, reduced outdoor visibility, and a strong smell of burning rubber and fuel. Community members were advised to keep windows shut and avoid unnecessary outdoor movement as the smoke persisted for an extended period while firefighting operations were ongoing.

Medavakkam, Velachery Corridor Gridlocked as Commuters Navigate Smoke-Filled Roads

The fire triggered severe traffic congestion along the busy Medavakkam, Velachery stretch, one of south Chennai’s major arterial routes. Motorists found themselves negotiating dense smoke and emergency vehicle convoys simultaneously, resulting in long queues and significant travel delays. Commuters heading towards the IT corridor and residential suburbs were among the worst affected. Traffic personnel were deployed to manage the situation and divert vehicles where possible.

Fire and Rescue Teams Mobilise Multiple Tenders and Water Tankers in Swift Deployment

The Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services launched a swift response to the emergency, rushing multiple fire tenders to the site as soon as the alarm was raised. In addition to the fire tenders, water tankers were commandeered to supplement the firefighting effort given the scale of the blaze. Personnel worked under challenging conditions amid the thick smoke and heat to prevent the fire from spreading further into the surrounding dump yard and residential fringes. The combined response eventually brought the blaze under control.

Cause of Fire Remains Unknown; Probe Underway by Authorities

As of the latest update, the exact cause of the fire has not been determined. Investigators have begun a formal inquiry into the origin of the blaze, with multiple scenarios being examined including spontaneous combustion of accumulated waste at the dump yard, an electrical fault, or possible negligence. Given that the site involves both municipal solid waste and an impounded vehicle lot, officials say the investigation may take several days to arrive at a conclusive finding. Further updates are awaited.
